Impact Investing for Global Health:Triple I Progress & Forward Look
On September 24th, 2024, Impact Investment Initiative (Triple I) for Global Health hosted a hybrid side event "Impact Investing for Global Health: Triple I Progress & Forward Look" in New York, United States of America, alongside the 79th United Nations General Assembly. The event marked Triple I's first anniversary and brought together over 150 participants from different stakeholders to explore enhanced collaboration across sectors and advance impact investment into global health.
<High Level Session>
At his opening remarks, H.E. Mr. TAKEMI Keizo, Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare of Japan, showed his expectation for Triple I to work as a catalyst in engaging a diverse range of stakeholders to promote impact investment in the field of global health. Minister Takemi also explained Japanese government's efforts to solve global health challenges such as the achievement of universal health coverage and strengthening pandemic preparedness and responses. Following Minister Takemi, the Rt. Hon. Nick Hurd, GSG Impact and Impact Task Force Chair, highlighted the need for impact investment in global health as well as the opportunities presented in the era of innovation, and showed his hope for this baton to be passed on to other G7 countries.
After the opening remarks, a High Level Panel Discussion was held on how to accelerate financing into global health to achieve outcomes aligned with SDGs. The Panel consisted of representatives from diverse stakeholders, including senior officials of international organizations, development finance institution, and private sector, as well as a key figure in impact investing. The Panelists highlighted the importance of partnerships as well as focusing on outcomes which allows space for innovation. They also noted the need to promote impact investment in areas such as maternal health, nutrition, diabetes and AMR, and in regions such as the least developed countries (LDC).
<Interactive Seminar>
Three sessions of interactive seminar were held according to the three pillars of Triple I, with panelists from impact investors, health-related international organizations, and development finance institutions. The first session was on "Standardization of impact measurement and management (IMM)" which was moderated by Mr. Ken Shibusawa, Triple I Co-Chair. The panelists shared their experience and approach to impact measurement, for example, around lives saved and improved, and challenges faced such as the lack of quality data and the ticket sizes. The second session was on "Establishing a set of policy standards and enabling environment" which was moderated by Mr. Steve Davis, Triple I Co-Chair. The panelists discussed the role of governments in accelerating impact investing in global health through policy, mechanisms, initiatives, protocol, and others, as well as in creating enabling environments of the inbound countries of impact investing. The panelists addressed the need for sharing both good practices and lessons learned from failures, among others. The third session was on "Enhancing Network and Partnership, with increased sectoral understanding" which was moderated by Dr. Ayoade Alakija, Triple I Co-Chair. The panelists discussed how we can increase cross sectoral understanding and ensure that investments deliver sustainable impact to the countries and communities in need. Panelists highlighted that derisking of investment in health is a critical element to scale the capabilities in emerging markets, and how partnership between public and private play a role in that.
